Industry Insight | Branding & Design
In the age of AI-generated art, DIY branding seems like it should be easier than ever. With a few prompts, anyone can create logos, graphics, and marketing materials in seconds. But there is a problem most people overlook.
AI does not create from understanding. It creates from patterns.
AI generates results based on what it has learned from existing examples. That means you are not always getting the best solution. You are getting what the system recognizes as familiar. It knows what has been done before, but it does not truly understand why something works.
AI can copy what exists. It cannot replace the experience of knowing why something works.
Think of it this way: AI had one Van Gogh to learn from, but it has millions of generic color-by-number pages, stock graphics, and average designs to learn from as well. The more those average designs are created and recycled, the more they become part of the pool future AI learns from.
The result? More designs that look impressive at first glance but fail when put to work.
Whatever industry you are in, you understand the value of experience. Your customers trust you because of the knowledge you have built over time.
You would not hand a Roomba a set of tools and ask it to rewire your house. So why would you trust the face of your company to a process that depends on you knowing enough about design to judge whether the result is actually effective?
The truth is, most people don’t have that knowledge. And that is not an insult. It is the same reason I would not attempt to replace a broken water line just because I can watch a few plumbing videos online.
You may have great taste. You may know what styles you like. But design is more than liking something visually.
- Does your logo work as a tiny favicon?
- Do your colors work across print, digital, signage, and materials?
- Does your design communicate trust and professionalism instantly?
These details are what separate a graphic from a brand.
AI is a powerful tool, but tools are only as effective as the person using them. A calculator does not make someone a mathematician, and AI does not make someone a designer.
The future of branding is not about rejecting AI. It is about understanding how to use it correctly.
Because Branding Is Not Just Art.
Branding Is A Tool.
And like any tool, it only works when you know how to use it.
